Description

 Indication & Scope

Amaryl®/WanSuPing® is a prescription second-generation sulfonylurea indicated as an adjunct to diet, exercise, and weight management to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when lifestyle interventions alone are insufficient. It may be used as monotherapy or in combination with metformin, insulin, or other glucose-lowering agents. Glimepiride provides once-daily glucose control by stimulating insulin secretion while also improving peripheral insulin sensitivity.

  • Mechanism: Glimepiride stimulates insulin release from pancreatic β-cells by closing ATP-sensitive potassium channels and enhances insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues.
  • Drug class: Second-generation sulfonylurea.
  • Clinical use: Monotherapy or combination therapy for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus requiring improved glycemic control.
