 Indication & Scope

Benzylpenicillin Sodium for Injection is a prescription natural penicillin antibiotic indicated for the treatment of susceptible infections caused by streptococci, pneumococci, non-penicillinase-producing staphylococci, Neisseria meningitidis, spirochetes, and Actinomyces. It is also used for syphilis, leptospirosis, tetanus, anthrax, actinomycosis, infective endocarditis, septicemia, meningitis, pneumonia, and other susceptible infections.

  • Mechanism: Benzylpenicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), resulting in bacterial cell lysis.
  • Drug class: Natural β-lactam penicillin antibiotic.
  • Clinical use: First-line treatment for susceptible streptococcal infections, meningococcal disease, syphilis, and other penicillin-sensitive bacterial infections.

How to use ?

Recommended Dose: Administer by intramuscular injection or intravenous infusion. The dosage depends on the type and severity of infection. Adults generally receive 0.8–20 million IU daily in divided doses.

 

Time: Reconstitute immediately before administration. Infuse intravenously at the recommended rate. Do not administer by rapid IV injection.

 

Instructions for use: A penicillin skin test is required before use. Use freshly prepared solution and complete the full prescribed course of therapy.

 

Interaction: Avoid mixing with erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracyclines, or alkaline solutions. Probenecid may increase penicillin plasma concentrations.

 

Side effects: Common adverse reactions include allergic reactions, rash, injection-site pain, nausea, diarrhea, and rarely anaphylactic shock, neurotoxicity, or antibiotic-associated colitis.
