 Indication & Scope

MoXin® (clarithromycin sustained-release tablets) is a prescription macrolide antibiotic indicated for infections caused by clarithromycin-sensitive microorganisms, including lower respiratory tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, and mild-to-moderate skin and soft-tissue infections.

  • Mechanism: Clarithromycin binds to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibits bacterial protein synthesis.
  • Drug class: Macrolide antibiotic.
  • Clinical use: Treatment of susceptible respiratory and mild-to-moderate skin and soft-tissue infections.

How to use ?

Recommended Dose: Adults and patients aged ≥12 years: 500 mg once daily. For severe infections, 1,000 mg once daily.

 

Time: Usually 7–14 days.

 

Instructions for use: Take orally with food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew. Patients under 12 years should use an appropriate non-sustained-release formulation.

 

Interaction: Clarithromycin inhibits CYP3A and may increase concentrations of CYP3A-metabolized drugs. Important interactions include certain statins, carbamazepine, calcium-channel blockers, warfarin, digoxin, and other medicines. Avoid concomitant use with astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, and terfenadine.

 

Side effects: Common adverse reactions include gastrointestinal symptoms, headache, dizziness, taste disturbance, and transient elevations in liver enzymes. Less common or serious reactions may include hypersensitivity, hepatotoxicity, pseudomembranous colitis, and cardiac QT prolongation or arrhythmias.
