 Indication & Scope

ZITHROMAX® (Azithromycin for Suspension) is a macrolide antibiotic indicated for the treatment of mild-to-moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is used for respiratory tract infections such as acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and otitis media, as well as uncomplicated skin and soft-tissue infections. It is also indicated for certain sexually transmitted infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, including uncomplicated urethritis and cervicitis.

  • Mechanism: Azithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria and inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, thereby suppressing bacterial growth.
  • Drug class: Macrolide antibiotic; azalide antibacterial agent.
  • Clinical use: Treatment of susceptible bacterial respiratory tract, skin and soft-tissue infections, and selected Chlamydia trachomatis infections.

How to use ?

Recommended Dose: For adults, the usual regimen is 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2–5, depending on the infection.

 

Time: Take orally as directed. The suspension may be taken with or without food according to the approved product labeling.

 

Instructions for use: Add the specified amount of water to prepare the suspension, shake well before each dose, and complete the prescribed course.

 

Interaction: Aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids may reduce the rate of azithromycin absorption. Azithromycin may increase exposure to digoxin and some other medicines; review concomitant medications when appropriate.

 

Side effects: Common reactions include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache, and dizziness. Less common but clinically important reactions include liver injury, hypersensitivity reactions, and QT-interval prolongation or other cardiac arrhythmias.
