Indication & Scope

Jardiance®/KeTangEn® is a prescription sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor indicated, as an adjunct to diet and exercise, to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure, and to reduce the risk of kidney disease progression, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization in adults with chronic kidney disease. Its glucose-lowering effect is independent of insulin secretion and is associated with a low risk of hypoglycemia when used alone.

Mechanism: Empagliflozin selectively inhibits SGLT2 in the proximal renal tubules, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion. This lowers blood glucose while providing additional cardiovascular and renal protective effects.
Drug class: Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor.
Clinical use: Treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, symptomatic chronic heart failure, and chronic kidney disease.

How to use ?

Recommended Dose: 10 mg orally once daily. For adults with type 2 diabetes requiring additional glycemic control and with adequate renal function, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily.

Time: Take once daily in the morning, with or without food.

Instructions for use: Swallow the tablet whole with water. Maintain adequate hydration during treatment. Assess renal function before initiation and periodically thereafter.

Interaction: Concomitant use with insulin or sulfonylureas may increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Diuretics may increase the risk of volume depletion and hypotension.

Side effects: Common adverse reactions include urinary tract infection, genital mycotic infection, increased urination, dehydration, hypotension, and dizziness. Rare but serious reactions include diabetic ketoacidosis, acute kidney injury, and Fournier’s gangrene.
