glucophage xr metformin hydrochloride extended release tablet 0

Description

 Indication & Scope

Glucophage XR® is a prescription biguanide antihyperglycemic agent indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The prolonged-release formulation provides sustained drug release with improved gastrointestinal tolerability compared with immediate-release metformin. It may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents, including sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors, SGLT-2 inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and insulin.

  • Mechanism: Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, improves insulin sensitivity, and reduces intestinal glucose absorption without stimulating insulin secretion.
  • Drug class: Biguanide antihyperglycemic agent.
  • Clinical use: First-line pharmacologic treatment for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, either alone or in combination with other glucose-lowering therapies.
