 Indication & Scope

Furosemide Tablets are a prescription loop diuretic indicated for the treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and renal disease. It is also indicated for the management of hypertension, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.

  • Mechanism: Inhibits the Na<sup>+</sup>-K<sup>+</sup>-2Cl<sup>−</sup> cotransporter (NKCC2) in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, increasing urinary excretion of sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and water.
  • Drug class: Loop diuretic.
  • Clinical use: Treatment of edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or renal disease; management of hypertension; adjunctive treatment of hypercalcemia and hyperkalemia.

How to use ?

Recommended Dose: Adults: Initially 20–40 mg orally once daily. The dose may be adjusted according to clinical response. Hypertension usually requires 40–80 mg daily.

 

Time: Preferably take in the morning. If twice-daily dosing is required, take the second dose in the early afternoon.

 

Instructions for use: Take with or without food. Monitor body weight, blood pressure, renal function, and serum electrolytes during treatment.

 

Interaction: NSAIDs may reduce the diuretic effect. Digoxin toxicity is increased by hypokalemia. Corticosteroids and aminoglycosides may increase electrolyte disturbances or ototoxicity. Lithium concentrations may increase during concomitant use.

 

Side effects: Common adverse reactions include increased urination, dehydration, dizziness, hypotension, hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hyperuricemia, nausea, and renal function abnormalities. Ototoxicity may occur, particularly with high doses.
