targocid teicoplanin lyophilized powder for intravenous infusion 200mg per bottle per box

Description

 Indication & Scope

Targocid® is a prescription glycopeptide antibiotic indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), enterococci, and streptococci. It is used for skin and soft tissue infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, bone and joint infections, septicemia, infective endocarditis, and peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis. It is also indicated for prophylaxis of Gram-positive infections in selected orthopedic surgery and may be administered orally for Clostridioides difficile-associated pseudomembranous colitis.

  • Mechanism: Teicoplanin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of peptidoglycan precursors, preventing cell wall formation and leading to bacterial cell death.
  • Drug Class: Glycopeptide antibiotic.
  • Clinical Use: Treatment of severe Gram-positive bacterial infections, particularly MRSA and other resistant organisms, and prophylaxis in selected orthopedic procedures.

Pediatric dosing is weight-based, and dosage adjustment is recommended in patients with severe renal impairment.

Time: Administer by slow intravenous injection, intravenous infusion over approximately 30 minutes, or deep intramuscular injection when appropriate.

Instructions for use: Reconstitute the vial according to the prescribing information before administration. Therapeutic drug monitoring is recommended during prolonged treatment or in patients with renal impairment to optimize efficacy and minimize toxicity.

Interaction: Concurrent use with aminoglycosides, amphotericin B, cyclosporine, cisplatin, or other nephrotoxic or ototoxic agents may increase the risk of kidney injury or hearing impairment and requires careful monitoring.

Side effects: Common adverse reactions include injection-site reactions, rash, pruritus, nausea, elevated liver enzymes, and headache. Serious adverse reactions include hypersensitivity reactions, nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, thrombocytopenia, and severe cutaneous adverse reactions.

What infections is Targocid® used to treat?

It is used to treat severe Gram-positive bacterial infections, including MRSA, bloodstream infections, infective endocarditis, bone and joint infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.

Can Targocid® be used for MRSA?

Yes. Teicoplanin is active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and is commonly used when resistant Gram-positive infections are suspected or confirmed.

Does teicoplanin require therapeutic drug monitoring?

Yes. Monitoring trough concentrations is recommended for severe infections, prolonged therapy, or patients with renal impairment to ensure adequate drug exposure and reduce toxicity.

Can Targocid® be used in patients allergic to penicillin?

Yes. It is often considered an alternative for patients with serious Gram-positive infections who cannot receive β-lactam antibiotics because of allergy.
