Description

 Indication & Scope

MEISHILUN® is a prescription carbonic anhydrase inhibitor indicated for reducing elevated intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma, secondary glaucoma, and for short-term preoperative treatment of acute angle-closure glaucoma. It is also used for the prevention and treatment of acute mountain sickness and as an adjunctive therapy for certain seizure disorders, edema associated with heart failure or drug therapy, central diabetes insipidus, and hypercalciuria.

  • Mechanism: Acetazolamide inhibits carbonic anhydrase, reducing aqueous humor production in the eye, promoting renal bicarbonate excretion, inducing mild diuresis, and stimulating ventilation through mild metabolic acidosis.
  • Drug class: Carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.
  • Clinical use: Treatment of glaucoma, prevention and treatment of acute mountain sickness, adjunctive therapy for absence seizures and edema, and selected metabolic disorders.

How to use ?

Recommended Dose: Adults generally take 250–500 mg daily, depending on the indication. Dosage should be individualized by the physician.

 

Time: Oral administration. May be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.

 

Instructions for use: Swallow tablets with sufficient water. Maintain adequate hydration and monitor serum electrolytes during prolonged therapy.

 

Interaction: Avoid concomitant use with high-dose aspirin. Monitor when used with lithium, digoxin, anticonvulsants, or other diuretics.

 

Side effects: Common adverse reactions include paresthesia, increased urination, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, taste alteration, electrolyte imbalance, metabolic acidosis, and skin rash. Rare but serious reactions include severe hypersensitivity, blood dyscrasias, and kidney stones.

Can it be used before climbing to high altitude?

Yes. Acetazolamide is commonly started 24–48 hours before ascent and continued during exposure to high altitude as directed by a physician.

Can Acetazolamide be taken long-term?

Long-term treatment may require regular monitoring of electrolytes, kidney function, and acid-base balance due to the risk of metabolic disturbances.

Who should not use Acetazolamide?
