Description
Indication & Scope
Levemir® is a prescription long-acting basal insulin analogue indicated to improve glycemic control in adults and children 2 years of age and older with type 1 diabetes mellitus and in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus requiring basal insulin therapy. It provides stable basal insulin coverage with a reduced risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia compared with NPH insulin. It is not indicated for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Mechanism: Insulin detemir is a recombinant long-acting insulin analogue that binds to insulin receptors, promoting glucose uptake and suppressing hepatic glucose production. Reversible albumin binding prolongs its duration of action.
- Drug class: Long-acting basal insulin analogue.
- Clinical use: Basal insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes requiring improved glycemic control.

How to use ?
Recommended Dose: Individualized according to blood glucose levels. Adults with type 2 diabetes typically start with 10 units or 0.1–0.2 units/kg once daily. Patients with type 1 diabetes require individualized basal insulin as part of a basal-bolus regimen.
Time: Inject once or twice daily at the same time each day.
Instructions for use: Administer by subcutaneous injection only into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites. Do not dilute, mix with other insulins, or use in an insulin pump or by intravenous injection.
Interaction: Oral antidiabetic agents, GLP-1 receptor agonists, ACE inhibitors, salicylates, and alcohol may increase hypoglycemia risk. Corticosteroids, thyroid hormones, diuretics, and sympathomimetics may increase insulin requirements.
Side effects: Common adverse reactions include hypoglycemia, injection-site reactions, lipodystrophy, edema, weight gain, allergic reactions, and transient visual changes.
