Indication & Scope
INVANZ® is a prescription carbapenem antibacterial indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe infections caused by susceptible microorganisms in adults and pediatric patients aged 3 months and older, including complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections, community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis), and acute pelvic infections. It is also indicated for the prophylaxis of surgical site infection following elective colorectal surgery in adults.
- Mechanism: Ertapenem inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), resulting in rapid bacterial cell death. It is stable against many β-lactamases and exhibits broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria.

How to use ?
Recommended Dose: Adults and adolescents (≥13 years) should receive 1 g once daily by intravenous infusion or deep intramuscular injection. Children aged 3 months to 12 years should receive 15 mg/kg twice daily, with a maximum daily dose of 1 g. For elective colorectal surgery prophylaxis, administer a single 1 g intravenous dose approximately 1 hour before surgery.
Time: Intravenous infusion should be administered over 30 minutes.
Instructions for use: INVANZ® may be administered by intravenous infusion or deep intramuscular injection. It should not be mixed with or diluted in dextrose-containing solutions. Reconstitute and dilute the product according to the approved prescribing information, and adjust the dosage appropriately in patients with severe renal impairment.
Interaction: Concomitant use with valproic acid or divalproex sodium is not recommended, as ertapenem can markedly reduce serum valproate concentrations and increase the risk of seizures. Probenecid may slightly prolong ertapenem exposure but generally does not require dosage adjustment.
Side effects: The most common adverse reactions include diarrhea, infusion-site phlebitis, nausea, headache, vomiting, rash, and injection-site pain. Serious adverse reactions may include hypersensitivity reactions, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, seizures, and severe cutaneous adverse reactions.
