 Indication & Scope

YAZ® is a prescription combined oral contraceptive indicated for pregnancy prevention. It is also indicated for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in post-menarcheal females aged 14 years and older who have no contraindications to oral contraceptives and who also desire contraception.

  • Mechanism: Suppresses ovulation, thickens cervical mucus, and alters the endometrium to prevent pregnancy. Drospirenone also possesses anti-androgenic and anti-mineralocorticoid activity, which helps improve acne and reduce fluid retention.
  • Drug Class: Combined hormonal oral contraceptive.
  • Clinical Use: Oral contraception and treatment of moderate acne in eligible females requiring contraception.

How to use ?

Recommended Dose: Take one tablet orally once daily at the same time each day following the order indicated on the blister pack. Start a new pack immediately after finishing the previous one without interruption.

 

Time: It is recommended to start on the first day of menstruation. Continue taking one tablet every day, including the four placebo tablets.

 

Instructions for use: Swallow the tablet with water. If one tablet is missed for less than 24 hours, take it as soon as remembered. If more than 24 hours have elapsed, contraceptive protection may be reduced and additional contraception may be required. Continuous use for 3–6 months may be needed to evaluate acne improvement.

 

Interaction: Enzyme-inducing drugs (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, topiramate, and St. John’s wort) may reduce contraceptive efficacy. Potassium-sparing medicines may increase serum potassium and require monitoring.

 

Side effects: Common adverse reactions include irregular uterine bleeding, nausea, breast tenderness, headache, mood changes, and fatigue. Rare but serious adverse reactions include venous or arterial thromboembolism, hypertension, liver disorders, and severe hypersensitivity reactions.
