Description
Indication & Scope
Mannitol Injection is a prescription osmotic diuretic indicated for the reduction of intracranial pressure and cerebral edema, reduction of intraocular pressure, promotion of diuresis in selected patients with acute kidney injury risk, and enhancement of urinary excretion of certain toxic substances.
- Mechanism: Mannitol increases plasma osmolality, drawing water from intracellular and interstitial spaces into the intravascular compartment. It is filtered by the glomeruli but minimally reabsorbed, producing osmotic diuresis.
- Drug class: Osmotic diuretic.
- Clinical use: Treatment of cerebral edema and elevated intracranial pressure, reduction of intraocular pressure before ophthalmic surgery, promotion of diuresis in selected patients, and adjunctive management of certain poisonings.

FAQ
What is Mannitol Injection used for?
It is primarily used to rapidly reduce intracranial pressure and cerebral edema, lower intraocular pressure, and promote osmotic diuresis in selected clinical situations.
Why do mannitol solutions sometimes contain crystals?
Mannitol may crystallize at low temperatures. The solution should be warmed until the crystals dissolve completely before administration.
Can Mannitol Injection be used in patients with kidney failure?
It is contraindicated in patients with established anuria due to severe renal disease because accumulation may increase the risk of fluid overload and osmotic nephrosis.
What should be monitored during treatment?
Serum osmolality, electrolytes, renal function, urine output, and fluid balance should be monitored closely.
