Indication & Scope
Unasyn® is a prescription β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combination indicated for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections, including respiratory tract, urinary tract, intra-abdominal, gynecologic, skin and soft tissue, bone and joint infections, septicemia, and gonorrhea. It is also indicated for perioperative prophylaxis in abdominal and gynecologic surgery.
- Mechanism: Sulbactam irreversibly inhibits β-lactamase enzymes, protecting ampicillin from enzymatic degradation and restoring antibacterial activity against β-lactamase-producing organisms.
- Drug class: Aminopenicillin/β-lactamase inhibitor combination.
- Clinical use: Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections and prevention of postoperative infections in selected surgical procedures.

How to use ?
Recommended Dose: Adults: 1.5–3 g every 6–8 hours by intravenous infusion or intramuscular injection, depending on infection severity.
Time: Administer by intravenous infusion over 15–30 minutes or slow intravenous injection.
Instructions for use: For intravenous or intramuscular use under medical supervision. Dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment. Do not mix in the same infusion solution with aminoglycosides.
Interaction: Probenecid may increase ampicillin concentrations. Monitor anticoagulant effects with warfarin and use caution with methotrexate. Avoid mixing with aminoglycosides in the same solution.
Side effects: Common adverse reactions include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash, pruritus, injection-site reactions, and elevated liver enzymes. Serious reactions include hypersensitivity, Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea, hematologic abnormalities, and seizures in susceptible patients.
