 Indication & Scope

Zithromax®/WeiHong® is a prescription macrolide antibiotic indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including respiratory tract infections, community-acquired pneumonia, urogenital infections, and uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections.

  • Mechanism: Azithromycin binds to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis, preventing bacterial growth and replication.
  • Drug class: Macrolide (azalide) antibacterial agent.
  • Clinical use: Outpatient treatment of susceptible bacterial infections, including respiratory infections, atypical pneumonia, and selected sexually transmitted infections.

How to use ?

Recommended Dose: Adults usually receive 1.5 g total dose: 3-day regimen: 500 mg once daily for 3 days. 5-day regimen: 500 mg on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on Days 2–5. For certain sexually transmitted infections, a single oral dose of 1 g may be used according to clinical diagnosis.

 

Time: Take orally once daily. Tablets may be taken with or without food.

 

Instructions for use: Swallow whole with water. Separate aluminum/magnesium antacids by at least 2 hours. Use only for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections to reduce antimicrobial resistance.

 

Interaction: Aluminum/magnesium antacids may reduce absorption. Monitor patients receiving warfarin, digoxin, or QT-prolonging drugs. Avoid combination with ergot derivatives.

 

Side effects: Common adverse reactions include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, headache, dizziness, rash, and fatigue. Serious adverse reactions may include allergic reactions, QT prolongation, severe liver injury, Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea, and severe skin reactions.
